About Us...
Stained glass windows in our home, designed and crafted by Curtis Randell
Artemisia opened its doors in March 2002. It only happened because of a broken leg:
When Annette broke her leg skiing in March 2001, it made her sit still for quite a while - long enough to start fantasizing about transforming her interest in fabrics and design
into a career.
Instead of continuing to look for a job in Taos, she began envisioning opening her own FiberArts Gallery, and after getting off the crutches, she and Curtis transformed
the dream into reality.
We chose the name Artemisia in recognition of the Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652).

Now, almost 8 years later, Artemisia is a favorite destination for Fiber Arts lovers from
all over. We are "on the map", and it is so very enjoyable for us to welcome back our regular return customers, who make it a point to come see us once or twice a year on their return visit to Taos.

Annette won "Best of Show" at the prestigious Taos Open Art Show 2003 for one of her jackets, was a finalist for a Niche award 2005 for her Taos Medicine Woman coat, and Artemisia as a business is routinely nominated for top 100 retailers of Fine Crafts in the
U.S. by Niche magazine.

Taking a break from fabric shopping in Paris

Taos is a unique melting pot for people from all over, and so it is also with Annette and Curtis:
Annette was born and raised in Marburg, Germany.
After graduating from law school she traveled the world, settled in the United States, raised her two boys, and eventually followed her dream by coming to Taos to make it her true home.
She and Curtis met soon after, got married Thanksgiving 2002 - and shall live together happily ever after...

Curtis, a musician and graphic designer from California, does all our advertising designs, plays bass guitar with the Cullen Winter Blues Band in the Alley Cantina, and on Sunday mornings, you may find him in the wide open fields around Taos launching his radio controlled airplanes.

Just like Annette has transformed her love for fabrics and design into a career at
Artemisia, Curtis transformed his passion for astronomy and fine crafts into
a business of his own:
In April 2008, he opened "Galileo's Universe" - right next door to Artemisia!

Curtis is ready to welcome you to Galileo's Universe
phone: 575 - 737-5200

Galileo's Universe features fine crafts, primarily from New Mexico artists, as well as
a small selection of telescopes and astronomy related items.
We are proud to show glass sculptures by Mitch Berg, hand crafted whimsical clocks by David Scherer, ceramic clay masks by Elaine Berg, fiber pieces by Alice Watterson, and
Air Craft sculptures by Sarena Mann, just to mention a few.

Thank you for browsing our web site - we appreciate your interest and hope to welcome you one of these days to Taos, to Artemisia, and to Galileo's Universe.
